Mass RMV Scam Text Message

Mass RMV Scam Text Message

A widespread Mass RMV text scam is currently targeting residents with fake "final notification" messages claiming unpaid traffic violations. These messages threaten license/registration suspension to steal personal or financial information. Do not click links, reply, or pay; delete the message immediately, as the RMV never requests payments via text.

About the Scam

  • The Message: Claims you owe money for violations and threatens immediate enforcement actions, such as suspension of driving privileges or vehicle registration.
  • The Goal: To trick you into clicking a link that leads to a fake website designed to look like an official government site to steal credit card numbers and personal information.
  • How to Protect Yourself:
    • NEVER click links: The RMV does not use text messages to demand payment or sensitive information.
    • Verify directly: Only use Mass.Gov/RMV for online transactions.
    • Ignore the threat: The messages create artificial urgency.
  • What to Do: Delete the message. If you are concerned, check your account status directly on the official Mass.Gov/RMV site.

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles warns that these are "phishing" scams attempting to impersonate state agencies.
