Common Signs of a McAfee Scam

• Browser Pop-ups: Flashy, repeating windows that appear while you browse the web or sit on your desktop, often featuring countdown timers.
• Urgent Language: Threatening messages claiming "Your PC is infected with (X) viruses" or "Your data will be deleted in 5 minutes".
• Phishing Emails: Messages offering massive "renewal discounts" (e.g., 85% off) sent from generic email addresses (like Gmail, Yahoo, or suspicious domains).
• Phone Numbers: Requests to call a customer service number immediately to "clean your PC". McAfee will never include a phone number in an alert to fix a virus.

How to Stop and Remove Fake Pop-ups

Most fake pop-ups happen because a shady website tricked you into clicking "Allow Notifications". You can easily block them through your browser settings:

In Google Chrome

1. Click the three vertical dots in the top right corner and choose Settings.
2. Select Privacy and Security on the left menu.
3. Click on Site Settings, then scroll down and click Notifications.
4. Look under the "Allowed to send notifications" list.
5. Find any unfamiliar or shady website URLs, click the three dots next to them, and click Remove or Block.

In Microsoft Edge

1. Click the three horizontal dots in the top right and select Settings.
2. Click Cookies and site permissions from the left-hand sidebar.
3. Scroll down and click on Notifications.
4. Under the Allow section, locate the unfamiliar website causing the pop-ups.
5. Click the three dots next to it and select Remove or Block.

What to Do Next

• Do Not Click: Never click "Renew", "Scan Now", or any buttons inside a suspicious pop-up or email.
• Verify Your Account: If you actually use McAfee, navigate to the official McAfee Website directly in a new tab to check your actual subscription status.
• Report the Scam: You can forward fake phishing emails to the official reporting address at scam@mcafee.com.
• Install an Ad Blocker: Utilize highly-rated browser extensions like uBlock Origin to stop malicious advertising (malvertising) scripts from triggering these pop-ups in the future.
