Idaho DMV Scam Toll Violation

Idaho DMV Scam Toll Violation

A widespread phishing scam is targeting Idaho residents with text messages falsely claiming to be from the DMV regarding unpaid traffic or toll violations. These messages demand immediate payment through a malicious link, often threatening license suspension. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) does not send text messages for citations; delete these texts immediately and report them.

DMV Scam

  • Method: Text messages (smishing) claiming, "State of Idaho Department of Vehicles(DMV) Final Notice: Enforcement Penalties Begin...".
  • Fake Info: The texts often reference a non-existent code, "15C-16.003".
  • Threats: They pressure you with phrases like "final notice," "license suspension," or "registration hold" to force quick action.
  • Goal: To steal personal information or payment details via fraudulent, malicious links.

Protect Yourself

  • Do Not Click: Never click on links in unexpected text messages claiming to be from a government agency.
  • Verify Independently: If you have questions about your driving record, only use the official Idaho DMV website.
  • Report It: Report the scam text to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
  • Ignore and Block: Delete the message and block the sender immediately.

Law enforcement agencies, including local sheriff's offices, have confirmed these are fraudulent, and no such enforcement actions are being taken via text.
