About the Scam

  • The Impersonation: While Paul López is a real official, he is the Denver Clerk and Recorder, not the "Clerk of Court". His office is not associated with a traffic division and does not issue traffic citations.
  • The Method: Victims receive a text message containing an official-looking document with a QR code or link demanding immediate payment to avoid arrest or legal action.
  • Red Flags:
    • Fake Contact Info: Notices often list "1667 Banpock Street" (a non-existent address) or incorrect phone numbers.
    • AI Errors: Many notices contain typos like "Slate of Colorado" instead of "State" or gibberish text in the seals.
    • Urgency: They use aggressive language like "final warning" to pressure you into acting without thinking.

What You Should Do

  1. Do NOT scan the QR code or click any links in the text.
  2. Delete and block the number immediately.
  3. Verify independently: If you are worried you actually have a ticket, contact your local municipal court directly using a phone number from an official .gov website.
  4. Report it: You can alert the Denver Clerk and Recorder’s Office at 720-913-VOTE or report the scam to the Denver DMV.
