Vinted Verification Scam - How to Protect Yourself
Vinted Verification Scam - How to Protect Yourself

The Vinted verification scam is a phishing scheme that heavily targets new sellers by tricking them into believing they must verify their financial details to finalize a sale or activate their account. Scammers use fake in-app buyer messages, lookalike SMS texts, or spoofed emails containing malicious links to steal banking credentials and drain funds directly from victims' accounts.

How the Scam Works

  • The Fake Sale Trigger: Immediately after you list an item, a scammer sends a message or email claiming your item has sold.
  • The Urgency Tactic: They tell you that you must click an external link to "verify your identity" or "confirm bank details" before the funds can be released. They often threaten account suspension if you do not comply.
  • The Lookalike Landing Page: The link directs you to a fake website designed to look exactly like Vinted or an official payment portal (such as vinted-checkout.net or vinted-uk.com).
  • The "Minimum Balance" Ruse: Once you enter your debit card, the site or a fake live chat operator claims you must have a specific balance (often $300 to $500) to successfully verify. Instead of verifying, they instantly withdraw large sums of money.

Key Red Flags to Watch For

  • Links in Chat: Real sales never require you to click a link in a message to receive your money or verify your card.
  • The Missing Badge: Official system messages from Vinted always come from a dedicated account with a verified checkmark badge next to the name. If it looks like a standard user profile, it is a scammer.
  • External Communication: Scammers will try to move you away from the platform to WhatsApp, standard SMS, or personal email.
  • No Order in the App: If an item actually sells, it will automatically show up under your "Orders" tab inside the official app, independent of any message.

What to Do If You Were Targeted

  1. If you haven't clicked anything: Block the user and report the message directly to Vinted.
  2. If you entered your banking details: Contact your bank immediately to freeze your cards, report the fraudulent charges, and request a chargeback or fraud investigation.
  3. Secure your account: Update your Vinted password immediately and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to prevent unauthorized access.
  4. Report the phishing: Forward scam emails to Vinted's team or use the official reporting tools highlighted in the Vinted Help Center Guide.
