If you received an unexpected text message claiming to be from Coinbase, it is a phishing scam (smishing) designed to drain your cryptocurrency wallet. Criminals are sending highly sophisticated text alerts to trick users into clicking malicious links or calling fraudulent support numbers.

Common Text Scam Variations

  • The Fake Withdrawal Alert: The text claims an unauthorized withdrawal or transaction is pending (e.g., "The OTP code for your withdrawal is 736191. If this was not you please call us..."), pushing you to call a fake helpline.
  • The "Real Code" Trap: In advanced attacks, hackers who already bought your leaked password online will trigger a real Coinbase 2FA code to your phone, then text or call you posing as support to "help you stop the hack"—their ultimate goal is getting you to read that code out loud.
  • The Account Lock Threat: Messages claiming your account has been flagged for "suspicious activity" or will be suspended unless you click a link to verify your identity.

Immediate Red Flags

  • Full Phone Numbers: Official Coinbase text communications only come from registered short codes (such as 29126 or 828500).
  • Requests for Sensitive Data: Coinbase will never ask for your password, 2-factor authentication (2FA) codes, or wallet seed phrases via text.
  • Urgent Demands to Move Crypto: No legitimate customer service agent will ever tell you to move your crypto to a "secure wallet," "vault," or "verification address".
  • Non-Coinbase Links: URLs that do not explicitly end in coinbase.com (e.g., misspelled domains or randomized links).

What to Do Right Now

If you only received the text:

  1. Do not click any links, do not reply, and do not call any listed phone numbers.
  2. Take a screenshot of the message for security tracking.
  3. Forward the raw message to 7726 (SPAM) to alert your mobile carrier.
  4. Email your screenshot to the official Coinbase Security Team.
  5. Delete the text message entirely.

If you clicked a link or shared information:

  1. Change your password immediately on Coinbase and your personal email.
  2. Log into the official app or website and revoke all active sessions/devices you do not recognize.
  3. Manually temporarily lock your account via the Coinbase security panel if you suspect an active breach.
