6Etsy Promo Code Scam - How to Protect Yourself

Etsy promo code scams typically involve fraudsters offering fake discounts or claiming you need to complete an off-platform payment to use a coupon, or buyers guessing simple coupon codes like "THANKYOU" or using extension tools to exploit a seller's generic discount setup.

Common Types of Promo Code Scams

  • Off-Platform Payment Bait: A "buyer" or external message offers a special promo code or extra discount, but asks you to complete the payment outside of Etsy (via Venmo, PayPal, or gift cards). Once you pay or move off-site, there is no real order, and Etsy's Purchase Protection will not cover you.
  • Guessed or Exploited Codes: For sellers, buyers sometimes guess common words (like "THANKYOU" or "SAVE20") or use coupon-finding browser extensions to apply unlisted or abandoned cart discounts meant for others.
  • Phishing Links in Messages: Scammers send fake messages claiming you won a coupon or need to click an external link to activate a promotional code, which actually leads to a fake login page designed to steal your credentials.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Stay on Platform: Never move a transaction or payment off Etsy. Real promo codes work directly inside Etsy’s secure checkout cart.
  • Use Complex Codes: If you are a seller, avoid simple, guessable coupon words. Use randomized, alphanumeric strings for private or targeted promotions.
  • Verify via Dashboard: Check your official Etsy seller dashboard or buyer account page rather than clicking links sent directly to your email or messages.
