"Hearing of Your Case in Court NR" Virus Emails

I got this one today at work 4/21/15. I thought it was legit:

"Dear Antonio,

This is to inform you to appear in the Court on the April 28 for your case hearing.
Please, do not forget to bring all the documents related to the case.
Note: The case will be heard by the judge in your absence if you do not come.

The Court Notice is attached to this email.

Kind regards,
Howard Hastings,
Clerk of Court."

I just received an email I was scared so I dowloaded it and unzipped it but was not able to open it. Am I in big trouble? It said this appearance in Court #00499094

"Dear Betty,

This is to inform you to appear in the Court on the February 24 for your case hearing.
Please, prepare all the documents relating to the case and bring them to Court on the specified date.
Note: The case will be heard by the judge in your absence if you do not come.

You can review complete details of the Court Notice in the attachment.

What should I do?

Do a full scan of your computer with the antivirus software installed on it.

Your computer may have gotten infected a virus.

Was it a scam ? I am not used to getting mail like this but this past year I have been harassed by phone and email.

It is a virus mail, do open the attachment.

Culprit tried to use the brand of a legal firm(Bryan Cave) and their TM(A Broader Perspective). FOLLOWING PHISHING SCAM IS AS FOLLOWS:

"Pretrial notice Hereby we inform that you are obliged to come as a defendant to Connecticut Appellate Court on February 15th, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. for the hearing of your case of illegal software use.

If necessary you have a right to obtain a lawyer for your protection. You are kindly asked to have an identity document with you. Personal appearance is compulsory.

Please find the plaint note with more detailed case information on our site and study it thoroughly.

I did have this email today but I was not able to see the attachment??

Saw it from my iPhone, would that still be safe that there was no attachment only email from them???

What scarce me I do have some courts going on but I have full knowledge about them.

You are okay as long as you did not open any attachment or click on any link.

I came across a notice (which I deleted) to appear in a court hearing on September 30, 2014 at Springfield, IL, advising me that if I do not appear, the judge will hear the case in my absence. What should I do to protect my interests?

It is a scam. Courts do not send these notifications via email message; it is usually done via postal delivery services (snail mail).

I get this email in Greece.I thought that probably was a dagerous email so searched online informations and found your warnings and help.Of course I deleted it.Thank you for let us know about it.

I have just received one, and going to assume it was from those rude people on youtube. I kind of figured it was already "spam", and Hotmail automatically put it into the spam folder. I deleted it. Thanks for letting everyone know for sure.

I had one of these come through on the day of an actual case I was involved in. Coincidence?

I have had several of these emails a day ! How do you stop them from being sent to you ? Is there a way to block the sender?

I smelt a rat as soon as I saw this e-mail. I NEVER open attachments, if I do not know and trust the sender.

Other people are not as cautious, and can easily be fooled into thinking the e-mail is genuine and open the attachment.

The irony is that it is the people who send these e-mails that should be appearing in court for fraud. It would be nice to see more being done to CATCH these fraudsters and put them in prison for a very long time.

Its not just in America and the UK, I've been sent one as well (I'm in Australia) but it was in my junk folder so that definitely screamed out spam! Mine was very brief though

It almost got me fooled, im waiting for a court hearing and was really confused why i was unable to open it? and why it wasnt posted in the paper mail, as well as why hadnt my lawyer call me about the news? Lucky for my anti virus, which refused to open the email, and tagging it as a Trojan... lucky i found this website, puts my mind at ease..

I received two of the court case emails today signed by two different court clerks. I knew it was a scam as soon as I saw it because I'm not involved in any court cases. I always look up emails like this to see if it's a bogus email.

No, only Microsoft Windows Operating System.

That scotcourts.gov.uk should deal with their ISP provider and get it sorted rather than passing the buck

i live in cheshire and have never been to scotland and always used my work email address which I never give out. Our software stopped this straight away.

I received one stating notice to vacate premises. It had a zip file that I won't open. It stated it was a copy of the order given to me and my family weeks ago.

I had a similar one to vacate premises due to foreclosure. I am in active 13 so it freaked me out. I was unable to open file my anti-virus detected a Trojan horse. I contacted my attorney they said it was scam..

I got one from court_secretary -zoom.co.at, Connecticut Appellate Court, with this email:

The scary thing about this is that the email address appeared to be genuine, it was from L.McNamara-scotcourts.gov.uk and I live in London so it was well targeted. The email came in on my iPad, but there was no attachment. Good old Apple!

The "Scotcourts" fake email is doing the rounds again today. I work at high court in Edinburgh and you will never be cited by email and the courts in Scotland cannot cite you to appear in England, it doesn't work like that.

I received the exact same email this morning too and was not sure whether it was genuine or not. Thank you, Google.

I also received the email. I was just shocked because it actually had my home state in the email. I guess I have given my email address and zip code to enough stores that the information is kept together. I am thankful I have enough sense to do a little research.

FYI, I've gotten identical emails from "clerks" in Chicago and New York as well, so they are obviously using every state.

The emails are sent as spam, so receiving them doesn't mean that your computer is infected. And, yes, this virus only targets computers running the Windows operating system.

This particular e-mail is being sent to me almost daily (sometimes twice a day) since just before Christmas. I've never clicked on the attachment. I delete the e-mails immediately. My virus software is up-to-date. And I'm on a Mac. (I think this Trojan targets Windows users.) So I think I'm safe.

I considered blocking the sender, but of course it comes from a different e-mail address each time. Is there anything I can do to get this to stop?

Scared the h**l out of me,like a fool I tried to download the sip.AVG blocked it and said it contained a virus.Guess it paid for itself.Will be watching this site to see if anyone has any luck with the attorney general

I also received an email like this. It is pasted below. Luckily, my corporate IT anti-virus software stripped out the attachment. The email appears to have been sent from notice_support.2-perkinscoie.com. Perkins Coie is a reputable law firm so I'm assuming the email address was spoofed.

I have received several of these messages but have not opened
the attachments because I've worked in the court system and
know such messages would never be sent by email. I tried to
reply to the sender to let him/her know the emails were being
forwarded to the Attorney General, but the message was returned
undeliverable. However, the return address was manager-cove.com.
I have sent this information to the Attorney General and hopefully the perpetrators will be exposed and arrested for their cybercrimes.

Got one of these, too. It was sent to an address unique to a probably hacked userbase of e-frontier.com

what do I do if I can't even get computer to boot up after opening the attachment?

ok, if the attachment has been opened, how do I get to any files? I can not even get into my PC at all.

Can it affect an I-Pad.

It was hard to find any information about this hoax on google. I live near washington county, so i wasnt sure if this was legit or not since it hit my spam box. thanks for the info.
