CHP Traffic Compliance Notification Scam

CHP Traffic Compliance Notification Scam

The California Highway Patrol(CHP) is warning of a widespread phishing scam sending text messages claiming to be a "Traffic Compliance Notification" for unpaid tickets. These fraudulent texts, often mentioning "final notice" or license suspension, aim to steal money and personal information. Do not click links or pay—the CHP never solicits payments via text.

About the Scam

  • Fake Warning: Texts claim you have an outstanding traffic violation requiring payment to avoid penalties, such as license suspension.
  • Phishing Attempt: The links provided lead to fake websites designed to steal financial or personal information.
  • No Text Notifications: The CHP does not use text messages to notify people of citations, fines, or legal actions.
  • Urgent Language: Messages use fear tactics, such as "final advisory" or immediate enforcement threats, to trigger quick, unverified action.

Protect Yourself

  • Do NOT click any links in the text message.
  • Do NOT reply and immediately delete the message.
  • Verify Independently: If you are worried about a potential violation, contact the local court clerk or the local CHP office directly using an official, trusted phone number.
  • Report: Report the text as spam and delete it.
