How to Install Fonts Windows Scam - How to Protect Yourself

Installing fonts on Windows is generally safe if done through official methods, but scammers often exploit fake "missing font" alerts or malicious download sites to trick users into downloading malware or viruses.

Safe Font Installation Methods (Windows 10 & 11)

Only download fonts from reputable sources like Google Fonts or the Microsoft Store.

Method 1: Direct Install

  1. Locate your downloaded font file (usually a .ttf or .otf file). If it’s in a .zip folder, you will need to extract the files first.
  2. Right-click the font file and select Install (or Install for all users).
  3. Alternatively, double-click the file to open the font preview, then click the Install button at the top.

Method 2: Drag and Drop

  1. Search for Font settings in your Windows search bar and open the menu.
  2. Drag and drop your downloaded font files into the box that says Drag and drop to install.

How to Identify Font Scams

  • Fake Website Alerts: Be wary of websites claiming "your system is missing this font" or "download our player/codec to view this font." Legitimate fonts are downloaded as static data files (like .ttf or .otf), not executable programs (like .exe or .msi).
  • Malicious Downloads: Scammers package malware inside .exe installers disguised as font packs. Never run an executable file to install a font.
  • Avoid Unverified Sources: Free font sites sometimes host compromised files. Stick to recognized foundries.
