Is Clincard a Scam or is it Legitimate? - Online Users Complaints

The Greenphire ClinCard itself is a legitimate prepaid card used by universities, hospitals, and pharmaceutical companies to pay clinical trial participants. However, there is a widespread frustration over the company's aggressive hidden fees and sudden card declines.

Many clinical trial patients have made complaints about ClinCard on social media websites. Here are the complaints:

  • Inactivity Fees: If you leave money on the card and do not use it for a few months, ClinCard automatically deducts a $4.50 to $6.00 fee every single month until your balance hits zero.
  • ATM Fees: Withdrawing cash at an ATM usually triggers a $3.00 fee from ClinCard on top of the regular ATM operator fee.
  • Frequent Declines: Users heavily report that the cards get randomly declined or blocked when trying to use them for online shopping, gas pumps, or bill payments.

How to Safeguard Your Funds

If you are enrolled in a clinical study and are issued one of these cards, use these strategies to avoid losing your money to fees:

  • Request a Bank Transfer Instead: Ask your clinical trial coordinator if you can opt out of the card. Many programs allow you to set up direct ACH deposits straight to your personal bank account.
  • Empty the Card Immediately: Do not store money on the card. Drain the balance as soon as the study funds are loaded to bypass the monthly inactivity fees.
  • Withdraw Cash with a Bank Teller: To bypass ATM cash fees, take the physical card inside a bank branch that accepts Visa/Mastercard. Present your photo ID to the teller and request a cash advance for the exact balance.
  • Link it to Amazon: If your card gets declined at local stores, many users successfully bypass restrictions by adding the ClinCard as a credit card payment option on their Amazon account and buying gift cards or household essentials.
