How the Scam Works

Scammers use aggressive tactics and technical tricks to manipulate visa holders and applicants:

• The Bait: An automated voice or live operator claims there is a "problem" with your visa status, an error on your immigration documents, an outstanding warrant, or an unpaid fee.
• The Scare Tactics: They threaten you with immediate arrest, visa cancellation, or deportation if you do not comply right away.
• Spoofing Numbers: They use specialized software to mask their true location, making your caller ID display a legitimate Australian government phone number.
• Personal Data: Scammers frequently harvest names, birth dates, and nationalities from social media or data breaches to sound authentic and bypass your suspicions.
• The Demand: They insist on urgent payment via untraceable methods like bank transfers, international wire services, cryptocurrency, or digital gift cards.

Red Flags to Watch For

The real Australian Government will never conduct business in this manner. A call is fraudulent if the operator does any of the following:

• Demands the immediate payment of a fine or penalty over the phone.
• Threatens or intimidates you with legal action, jail time, or deportation.
• Asks for your financial details, credit card numbers, or your secure ImmiAccount credentials.
• Directs you to type numbers into your phone keypad to connect with an "agent".

How to Protect Yourself

If you are targeted by an unexpected or suspicious call, protect your identity and finances by following these steps:

1. Hang Up Immediately: Do not engage, argue, or follow any automated prompts given by the caller.
2. Verify Independently: If you have an active visa application, log into your official ImmiAccount portal to check your status. You can also verify a caller's legitimacy by demanding they read back your exact file number or application lodgement date.
3. Check Agent Credentials: If dealing with a third-party representative, ensure they are registered by checking the official Migration Agents Registration Authority (MARA) online directory.
4. Report the Incident: Document the scammer's phone number and report the interaction online directly to the ACCC Scamwatch or via the official Department of Home Affairs Immigration Dob-in Service.
