36Th District Court Detroit Scam Texts

Detroit's 36th District Court and the Michigan Attorney General have issued urgent warnings regarding a widespread text message scam impersonating the court. Scammers are using fraudulent messages to steal personal and financial information through a technique known as "smishing".

How the Scam Works

  • The Message: Recipients receive a text claiming they have an unpaid toll road violation or a parking citation.
  • The Threat: The text often includes an image labeled "Notice of Civil Infraction Hearing" and falsely claims you must appear in person or pay a penalty immediately to avoid severe consequences.
  • The Trap: It includes a QR code or a link that leads to a deceptive website designed to look like the Michigan Department of State.
  • Fake Officials: Some messages are signed by a "John Smith," who is not a real judge or clerk at the 36th District Court.

How the Real Court Operates

The 36th District Court never sends payment demands via text message or email.

  • Official Notices: All legitimate notices to appear or citations are sent exclusively through the U.S. Mail.
  • Phone Scams: Be aware of "spoofing" where callers use a fake ID that looks like the court's number (e.g., 313-965-8700) to demand payment for active warrants. Court staff will never call to demand immediate payment over the phone.
  • Payment Methods: The court does not accept payments via prepaid gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps, or cryptocurrency.

If you believe you actually owe a fine, contact the court's official line at 313-965-2200. And, If you have already shared financial information, contact your bank immediately.
