AT&T 50% Discount Scam - How to Protect Yourself

How the Scam Works

• The Pitch: You receive an unsolicited robocall or text stating your 50% discount is about to expire or that you qualify for a new promotion.
• The Hook: To "activate" the discount, they ask for your account number, login passwords, or the one-time PIN verification code texted to your phone.
• The Theft: They often demand an upfront payment—frequently requesting gift cards (like Target, Amazon, or eBay) or prepaid debit cards—to cover "processing fees" or pre-pay six months of service.
• The Fallout: Once they have your PIN, they lock you out of your account, order expensive new devices under your name, or immediately drain the gift cards.

Major Red Flags

• Demanding Gift Cards: No legitimate utility or telecom company will ever require payment via gift cards.
• Asking for One-Time PINs: AT&T explicitly states their employees will never call you to ask for a temporary verification code.
• Unsolicited Bill Reductions: Providers do not proactively call customers out of the blue to slash bills by half without any context.

If You've Been Targeted

1. Hang Up Immediately: Do not press any buttons or call back the number provided in the message.
2. Verify Directly: Call the official phone number listed on your physical bill or check the verified AT&T Support Page.
3. Change Your PIN: If you accidentally shared information, log into your official app or website immediately to update your password and account PIN.
4. Report the Fraud: Report the encounter to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) or forward spam texts directly to 7726 (SPAM).
