Zoho Backstage Scam - How to Protect Yourself
Zoho Backstage Scam - How to Protect Yourself

Zoho Backstage itself is a legitimate enterprise event management software developed by Zoho Corporation, but scammers frequently abuse the Zoho name or platform to target unsuspecting victims.

The Fake Job / Recruiter Scam

Cybercriminals post fake job listings on platforms like LinkedIn or ZipRecruiter. During the "hiring process," they send a malicious booking link disguised as a Zoho meeting or Zoho Backstage event registration.

  • The Trap: Clicking the link triggers an automatic download of a malicious .exe file disguised with Zoho branding.
  • The Damage: This malware is designed for credential theft, data reconnaissance, and taking over your device.

Phishing Emails & Fake Invoices

You may receive an email or text message claiming you have a pending or renewed subscription to "Zoho Backstage" or that an account is on hold.

  • The Trap: The email comes from a lookalike domain (like zohCworkplace.com) and prompts you to click a button or link to cancel the charge or verify your account.
  • The Damage: These lookalike forms steal your credit card details or login credentials.

Customer Billing Disputes

Some users label Zoho a "scam" in online forums due to sharp frustrations over customer support, aggressive pricing model changes (such as removing Backstage from the standard Zoho One license suite), or tech glitches during live events. While these are poor user experiences, they are standard corporate disputes rather than criminal fraud.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Check the URL: Official links will always be hosted on a domain ending in zoho.com or zohosites.com. Watch out for subtle misspellings.
  • Never Download Unknown Files: If a "recruiter" or "event host" asks you to download an executable file (.exe) to join a meeting or view an agenda, close the tab immediately.
  • Verify Direct Charges: If you see an unexpected charge or email regarding a subscription, do not click the links in the email. Log directly into your bank or official Zoho portal independently to check your status.
