Traffic Violation Scam Texts - Protect Yourself

Traffic violation texts are scams designed to steal your financial information and personal data. Legitimate government agencies, courts, and law enforcement do not send payment requests, final notices, or legal summons via unsolicited text messages.

Red Flags

  • Urgent & Threatening Tone: Scammers use high-pressure language like "Final Notice," "Irrevocable," or "Mandatory" to cause panic.
  • Threats of Escalation: Messages often claim your license will be suspended, your registration cancelled, or an arrest warrant issued if you don't pay immediately.
  • Suspicious Links or QR Codes: The texts frequently contain shortened URLs (e.g., cutt.ly) or QR codes that lead to fake websites mimicking official DMV or court pages.
  • Inconsistencies: Notices may list a state or county where you don't live, mention "toll violations" in states without toll roads, or contain spelling and grammar errors.
  • Generic Information: Fake notices often lack your name, license plate number, or specific citation details.

Received a Scam?

  1. Do Not Click or Scan: Never click links or scan QR codes in unsolicited messages.
  2. Do Not Respond: Replying "STOP" or "NO" tells scammers your number is active, which can lead to more spam.
  3. Verify Manually: If you're concerned, visit your state's official DMV or court website directly by typing the address into your browser, or call them using a verified number from an official site.
  4. Report & Delete: Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) for your mobile carrier to investigate, then delete the message.
  5. Secure Your Accounts: If you already clicked a link or entered information, contact your bank immediately to freeze your accounts and monitor for unauthorized activity.
