Common 236 Area Code Scams

• The One-Ring (Premium-Rate) Scam: A 236 number calls your phone and hangs up after just one ring. Scammers rely on your curiosity to make you call back. If you call back, you may be automatically routed to an international premium-rate hotline, racking up expensive per-minute toll charges on your phone bill.
• "Wrong Number" Text Scams: You receive a text message that seems like an accident, such as "Hey, do you have time for coffee?" or "Is this the doctor's office?". If you reply out of courtesy to tell them they have the wrong number, a scammer (or AI bot) will try to build a friendly relationship with you over days or weeks, eventually leading to a crypto or investment scam.
• Impersonation Scams: Fraudsters pose as reputable organizations like the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), local banks, or delivery services. They will call or text claiming you owe urgent taxes, have an unpaid road toll, or have a package held at a warehouse to trick you into revealing your credit card data.

How to Protect Yourself

• Do Not Call Back: Never return a missed call from an unknown 236 number. If it is an emergency or a legitimate business, they will leave a voicemail or find another way to reach you.
• Do Not Reply to Texts: Replying to a suspicious text—even writing "STOP"—confirms to the scammer that your line is active and monitored. This will drastically increase the amount of spam you receive.
• Block and Report: Use your smartphone's built-in features to block the number. You can also forward spam text messages to 7726 (SPAM) to alert your mobile carrier.
• Verify Independently: If a caller claims to be from a government agency or a bank, hang up immediately. Look up the organization's official phone number on their website and call them back directly to check if the request is real.
