Many homeowners look up this term after a salesperson knocks on their door. While these are legally registered businesses providing actual bug-spraying services, their high-pressure marketing tactics have led hundreds of consumers to flag them as deceptive or fraudulent:

• The "Neighbor" Bait: The salesman will claim they are "already servicing your neighbor down the street" and offer you a steep discount because their truck is already in the area.
• Hidden Recurring Contracts: They often pitch a cheap, "one-time" preventative treatment or a seasonal trial. In reality, they slide an electronic tablet or a rushed contract over for you to sign, binding you to an expensive 1-to-2-year quarterly subscription.
• The Same-Day Trap: Technicians frequently start spraying your yard immediately after you sign. This is intentionally done to void your standard consumer right to cancel the contract within 3 days.
• Exorbitant Cancellation Fees: If you notice unexpected charges on your credit card and try to cancel the service, the company will enforce an automated cancellation fee (often $150 to $250).
• Imposter Scams: Local police departments have also issued warnings regarding entirely fake individuals who do not even work for these companies, walking door-to-door using the "Shield" name to scope out homes or steal credit card data upfront.

How to Protect Yourself

• Never sign on a tablet immediately. Demand a physical or emailed copy of the full agreement to read over before giving out payment details.
• Ask for their licensing. Legitimate technicians and salesmen are legally required to carry a valid state pesticide application or solicitor's license. Ask to see it.
• Say "No thanks" and close the door. If a salesperson ignores your "No Soliciting" sign or acts aggressively, you are under no obligation to keep talking to them.
• Check online ratings first. Before agreeing to anything, look up the specific branch name on the Better Business Bureau (BBB) or local community forums.
