Uber Code Text Scam - How to Protect Yourself

How the Scams Work

• The In-App "Driver" Phishing Scam: After you request a ride, a scammer (hijacking a driver account or posing as one) calls you through the app. They claim a "new policy" requires account verification before pickup and ask for your phone number, email, and the text code you just received. Sharing it grants them full access to your account.
• The Random Account Takeover: You randomly receive an Uber text code while sitting at home. This means a bot or scammer is actively trying to break into your account or set up a fake one using your phone number.
• The Smishing Link: You receive a text claiming your account is suspended or a ride is arriving, accompanied by a fraudulent link designed to steal your credentials.

How to Protect Yourself

• Never share your OTP (One-Time Password): According to the official Uber Phishing Help Guide, Uber employees and drivers will never call, text, or email you to request your password, verification codes, or banking details.
• Hang up and cancel: If a driver demands a code before picking you up, hang up immediately. Cancel the ride and report them.
• Reply "STOP": If you keep getting unsolicited verification texts, reply with the word STOP to block the short-code messages.
• Report the incident: If you experience an in-app scam attempt, report the driver immediately via the Help Center inside your app.
