Luggage Scams - How to Protect Yourself

The Contraband Tag-Switch Scam

In this scheme, rogue baggage or ramp handlers intercept checked luggage behind the scenes.

• How it works: Workers remove your legitimate barcode sticker from your suitcase. They place it on an identical or separate bag stuffed with illegal drugs or contraband.
• The Danger: If customs intercepts the drug bag, your name and itinerary are tied to it, leading to immediate arrest and potential prosecution for drug trafficking abroad.
• The Red Flags: Your bag arrives at your destination late, has a handwritten "rush tag," is missing its tag completely, or features a clipped tag.

How to Protect Yourself

• Take Photos: Photograph your suitcase from all sides at the check-in counter. Ensure the attached barcode tag and its numbers are clearly visible.
• Record the Weight: Take a picture or video of your bag on the airline scale. Contraband bags will almost never match your original receipt weight.
• Use Electronic Trackers: Place a GPS tracker (like an AirTag) inside your luggage so you can prove exactly where your actual physical bag is located.
• Check Airline Apps: Monitor your digital baggage status through your airline's app to ensure no extra bags are mysteriously attached to your reservation.
• Lock It: Always use a secure, TSA-approved lock to prevent anyone from opening your bag or adding items.

The Discarded Tag Fraud Scam

This scam targets passengers after they safely collect their bags from the carousel.

• How it works: Travelers often rip off their sticky white airline tags and throw them into airport or hotel trash cans. Scammers retrieve these tags to scan the barcode.
• The Danger: The barcode contains your private passenger data, full name, frequent flyer number, and flight itinerary. Scammers use this information to file fraudulent "lost baggage" or "missing item" claims with the airline or insurance companies under your name to pocket the reimbursement payout.
• The Consequences: If you ever actually lose your luggage in the future, the airline may deny your legitimate claim because their system shows you have a history of fraudulent filings.

How to Protect Yourself

• Keep Tags Attached: Do not remove your barcode tags while you are still inside the airport or baggage claim area.
• Destroy at Home: Wait until you arrive at your home or hotel room to remove the tags.
• Shred Everything: Treat airline luggage tags and paper boarding passes like bank statements. Shred or tear them into tiny pieces before throwing them away.
