The Fake Email / Business Upgrade Scam: A "buyer" asks for your email address to pay via Venmo. Instead of getting paid, you receive a fake email claiming the transaction is stuck or that you must pay a fee to "upgrade" to a business account.

The Fake Payment Screenshot: The buyer shows a fabricated screenshot or text message stating money was sent, but no actual funds exist in your Venmo app.

The Accidental Payment Reversal: A stranger sends money to your Venmo using a stolen card and claims it was a mistake, asking you to wire back the cash. When the original transaction gets reversed, you lose the money you sent back.

Friends and Family Trap: Scammers insist on using the "Friends and Family" option, which offers zero buyer or seller protection and cannot be reversed

Warning Signs

• The buyer or seller asks for your phone number or email address right away.

• You receive payment notifications through regular text messages or emails instead of the app.

• The person demands extra steps, fees, or upgrades to unlock funds.

• The profile of the user is brand new or lacks normal history.

How to Protect Yourself

• Never share your email or phone number just to receive a payment; your Venmo username or QR code is enough.

• Always check your app directly to confirm a balance update rather than trusting screenshots, texts, or emails.

• Never send back accidental transfers yourself; report them directly inside the Venmo Help Center instead.

• Meet face-to-face in a safe, public spot and deal in cash whenever possible for local marketplace trades.
