Cloud Data Email Scam - How to Protect Yourself

Cloud data email scams are phishing campaigns where fraudsters impersonate services like Google Drive, iCloud, or OneDrive. They use urgent warnings—like "Storage is Full" or "Subscription Expired"—to trick you into clicking malicious links designed to steal your passwords or credit card details.

Recognizing the Scam

  • Fake Urgency: Claims that your account will be deleted or suspended within 24–48 hours if you do not take action.
  • Lookalike Links: The URL provided may look similar (e.g., apple-support-cloud.com) but redirects to a fraudulent page.
  • Payment Declines: Alerts stating your latest payment was declined and requesting that you re-enter your billing information.
  • Request for Personal Data: Asks for sensitive info like your Social Security number, passwords, or government-issued ID to "verify your identity".

Protect Yourself

  1. Never Click Links: Do not click links or download attachments directly from a storage-related email.
  2. Verify Manually: Go directly to the official platform (e.g., log into your account via iCloud or Google Drive) to check your actual storage limit or billing status.
  3. Check the Sender's Address: Look closely at the actual email address, not just the display name. Official services will use their specific domain (e.g., @google.com or @apple.com).
  4. Report the Email: Mark the message as junk/spam in your email client, or forward phishing emails to the FTC ReportFraud portal or the Anti-Phishing Working Group.
