If you receive an unsolicited text message offering a job or asking you to chat on another app, do not click any links, do not reply, and block the sender immediately.

Common Red Flags

  • Platform shifts: The text asks you to switch over to WhatsApp or Telegram to contact a "hiring manager" or "mentor".
  • Unbelievable offers: They offer massive payouts (e.g., $100–$300 daily) for very minimal effort (e.g., 1 hour of work per day).
  • Vague requirements: The job usually involves generic tasks like "rating products," "optimizing data," or "boosting visibility" with no experience required.
  • Urgency tactics: The message pushes you to act quickly before the "opportunity" expires or your account is deactivated.

If You Have Received a Text Scam

  • Do not engage: Replying to the message lets scammers know your phone number is active.
  • Block and delete: Block the phone number through your mobile carrier and delete the message thread.
  • Report the message: Forward the message to 7726 (SPAM) to alert your carrier, or log it directly with the Federal Trade Commission.
  • Verify on the source platform: If you are actively applying for jobs, log into your official Indeed Job Seeker account directly to check your real application status and messages.

What Is Their Ultimate Goal?

These text strings usually mutate into two types of fraud:

  1. Task Scams: They build a fake dashboard showing you are "making money" but force you to deposit your own cryptocurrency to "unlock" your earnings, stealing whatever cash you upload.
  2. Identity Theft: They request your social security number, bank routing numbers, or your Indeed sign-in details under the guise of an "onboarding process".
