Universal Tax Advocates Scam - How to Protect Yourself

How the Scam Works

• Impersonation: Fraudsters use names that sound like official federal programs or legitimate businesses to trick you. They often spoof caller IDs to make it look like the IRS or a local government agency is calling.
• The "Fresh Start" Lie: Scammers typically claim your account is flagged for back taxes or missed filings. They promise they can use an exclusive program to "wipe out" or drastically reduce your debt.
• High-Pressure Demands: They will pressure you to pay immediate "upfront fees" or "re-filing costs". They almost always demand payment through untraceable methods like wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or gift cards.
• Phishing for Identity Theft: They will ask you to confirm your Social Security Number (SSN), banking details, or click on malicious links to "review your file".

Red Flags to Watch For

• Unsolicited text messages, automated voicemails, or emails regarding tax relief. The IRS will never initiate contact with taxpayers via text, email, or social media.
• Demands for upfront cash before any actual documentation or contract is provided.
• Verbal guarantees that your tax debt will be completely eliminated.
• Extreme urgency, or threats of immediate arrest and wage garnishment if you do not comply over the phone.

If You Were Targeted

1. Hang Up and Block: Do not reply to the messages, press any numbers to speak to an operator, or click on embedded links.
2. Verify Directly: If you are genuinely worried that you owe back taxes, log into your official account on the IRS Portal or check with your local government's legitimate tax authority directly. Never call back the numbers provided by the solicitor.
3. Report the Fraud: Forward phishing emails to phishing@irs.gov. Report the unsolicited scam calls to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) and file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
4. Protect Your Identity: If you accidentally shared your SSN or financial information, immediately file an identity theft claim and monitor your bank statements for unauthorized activity.
