Online Threat Alerts (OTA) - Alerting you to scams and frauds.
I received a fake recorded message from telephone number 0417 814 318, claiming to be from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and threatening a court case if I do not make payment for taxes owed. The recorded message states an ATO tax debt was overdue and an arrest warrant would be issued by the courthouse. But, this is just another scam where scammers pretend to be ATO and threaten and frighten potential victims with arrest warrants in order to trick into sending money.
If you are not sure whether an ATO call is legitimate, hang up and phone them at 1800 008 540 to verify. Scammers are constantly developing new ways to steal from potential victims, and will often try to take advantage of people when they are most vulnerable.
