How to Tell if It’s a Scam

Even if the "From" address looks correct, the following signs indicate a phishing attempt:

• Generic Greetings: Legitimate Apple emails almost always address you by your full name or the name on file, never as "Dear Customer," "Dear Client," or just your email address.
• Urgent or Threatening Language: Scams often claim your account is "locked," "disabled," or "at risk" to pressure you into acting quickly.
• Suspicious Links: Hover your mouse over any links (or long-press on mobile) to see the actual destination. If it doesn't lead to a verified apple.com domain, it is a scam.
• Requests for Sensitive Info: Apple will never ask for your Social Security number, credit card details, or two-factor authentication codes via email.
• Grammar and Spelling: Many phishing emails contain awkward phrasing, typos, or inconsistent formatting.

Safe Steps to Take

1. Do Not Click Links: Instead of using links in the email, go directly to the official Apple Account page or check your Settings app on an iPhone or Mac to verify your account status.
2. Report the Email: Forward the suspicious message as an attachment to reportphishing@apple.com.
3. Check Your Purchases: If the email is a "receipt" for something you didn't buy, check your official purchase history in the App Store or via reportaproblem.apple.com.
4. Secure Your Account: If you accidentally entered your password on a suspicious site, change your Apple Account password immediately and ensure Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is enabled.
