Walmart Account Scam Call - How to Protect Yourself
Walmart Account Scam Call - How to Protect Yourself

If you receive a phone call claiming there is a fraudulent charge on your Walmart account, hang up immediately—it is a widespread robocall scam. The scam uses highly realistic, AI-generated voices (often introducing themselves with fake names like Mary, Kimberly, Emma, or Carl). The caller ID is frequently spoofed to look exactly like a local Walmart or corporate office.

How the Scam Works

  1. The Bait: You receive an automated message or live call claiming a high-value purchase—most commonly a $919.45 pre-authorized charge for a PlayStation 5 and a 3D headset—has been placed on your account.
  2. The Panic: The high dollar amount is intentionally used to scare you into making a quick decision.
  3. The Trap: The recording urges you to "press 1" or call a specific number back to speak with a "fraud representative" to cancel the order.
  4. The Theft: If you engage, a live scammer will pretend to reverse the charge but will instead ask for your Social Security number, credit card details, bank information, or request remote access to your device.

What You Should Do

  • Do not press any numbers or call back: Pressing numbers or dialing the provided number verifies your line is active, making you a target for more spam.
  • Check your account independently: Open your official Walmart app or log directly into Walmart.com to look at your purchase history.
  • Contact official support: If you see actual suspicious activity, close the app and use the official Walmart Help Center to reach legitimate customer care.
  • Secure your data: If you accidentally shared information, immediately freeze your affected payment cards and change your online passwords.
