Who can this scam be reported to?

  • March 27, 2023 at 2:11 PM by an anonymous user from: Corona, California, United States

Got a similar email but it doesn't mention "geek squad." The sender's name is "Nathaniel | Billing~Dept" and the ostensible billing amount is $379.99. The phone number given is 973~607~3182.

Something worth noting is that the "to:" and "CC:" fields both contain several addresses. Any time you get a questionable billing-related email, always look at the header to see if there are multiple recipients. No legitimate billing email would ever do this. It would always be sent to you privately. I suspect scammers do this intentionally so they don't waste time with anyone savvy enough to notice. They want calls from "easy marks."

Today (2-14-2023) I received 3 emails similar to the above but with the phone number 1 802 549 6034. I went ahead and made a fake google number and called. It immediately took me to a call center rep with no bot or intro. I gave the rep my invoice number and he then directed me to a screen share website(only used by scammers and not geek squad). I asked him if he then told me to get my bank creds ready. I called him out and he told me to F*** off and hung up.

I recieved 3 emails today with this scam saying it’s charging me $349.99 for an annual fee for Intuit through Best Buy Geek Squad. It says my payment was successful but clearly it’s a scam because I’ve never had anything from geek squad and based on this I now know it is a scam. The number they said to contact was different than what other people noted. This is the number they put on the invoice:

    802-549-6034

Glad I checked first before opening PDF.

Geek Squad is a service through Best Buy and I didn't know how Intuit got mixed up with

    that.

Don't assume! Even if it looks legitimate

    Jeez!

Got one yesterday and a similar one today. Grrr. I freaking hate scammers and thieves!

  • September 27, 2022 at 1:43 PM by an anonymous user from: Chicago, Illinois, United States

I too received a fake Intuit email. Intuit does not own Geek Squad, I think that it is a Best Buy service. Although I opened the email, I did NOT open the PDF which may contain malicious content. What I did not notice before opening the email was the use of lots of single quotes that made no sense as a subject line.

Be Alert! bad spelling or punctuation is a common indicator of phishing.

  • September 22, 2022 at 8:57 AM by an anonymous user from: Downtown Redmond, Redmond, Washington, United States

I received this scam yesterday. It's so obviously fraudulent.

  • September 20, 2022 at 5:34 PM by an anonymous user from: Loudoun, Ashburn, Virginia, United States

So I wasn't aware of having any Geek Squad subscription and I called the number in the email, 808-444-7486, which is in Kaunakakai, HI. A woman answered, giving a first name and identifying herself as being with Geek Squad and I questioned her about the email. She asked for the invoice number on it, which I gave her, and she claimed the order came out of Dayton, OH, and when I advised that I had made no such purchase, she stated that I was a victim of fraudulent activity. She stated that she would open a ticket to cancel the transaction but that I would have to go to the App Store on my iPhone and she download this program that would create the ticket. Yeah, right. I refused, and she told me it was the only way the transaction could be canceled, and not to be worried, it wasn't a scam. I told her I would check it out and call her back, and she hung up the phone. Ha!

  • September 20, 2022 at 9:53 AM by an anonymous user from: Englewood, Colorado, United States

  • September 19, 2022 at 1:07 PM by an anonymous user from: Loudoun, Ashburn, Virginia, United States

I fell for it. I have to redo my bank account online profile, and clean my hard drive by resetting my computer. One relief is knowing to call my bank and my internet provider rigbt away, they took care of everything. I noticed while on my pc while on the phone with me, that they give you a code and once you enter it, they take over your mouse. Very scary.

I just almost fell for this until I looked it up while on the phone with them. I saw this article. The number was different tho. But the guy did not speak tech jargon at all and the background was loud. Best Buy wouldn't be so unprofessional. He wanted me to open a web browser and fill out a form. After reading this I just hung up on him. He had tried to tell me someone had hacked my account when I told him we hadn't signed up for anything. What a sham! Don't fall for it!

I received the Intuit Geek Squad auto renewal email message yesterday. My charge was going to be $199.99. The “contact us immediately” number was 1-860-579-9888. I called and a male with a foreign accent wanted me to logon to my computer to begin the refund process. I told him I didn’t have a computer and he repeated his first statement. I realized it was a scam and told him I would take care of it myself and then hung up.

  • June 22, 2022 at 3:17 PM by an anonymous user from: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States

Got the email called the number. They answered.. "Geek Squad". I listened to background and you can tell it is quite active. I reverse searched the given number and saw the scam alert. The dude had foreign accent and told me they were in Texas.

I received the email and called. They had me to to Google and to anydesk.com

When it would not come up they hung up. Do I need to do something to my computer and phone

  • June 17, 2022 at 9:19 PM by an anonymous user from: New York, New York, United States

These are very skilled talkers and they insist that they are helping you get a refund. They try to get on your homepage and then use the icons to suggest ways for you to get a phony refund. There really has been no charge at all. They also tell you to download a pay service and wire them $500.00. At this point the scam becomes evident. Then they say you will be sued unless you let them try to issue you a refund. They are very convincing and all have accents and have no idea what geek squad is.

  • June 17, 2022 at 5:07 PM by an anonymous user from: New York, New York, United States

They try to get checking account numbers and pins and any info that they can. They say they will sue you if you do not use their method of getting a refund. Their method is clearly just a way to get any type of information that you give. They also try to get into your screen and when challenged they say you will be sued. This is an outrage.

I received the same bogus e-mail with pdf attachment (which I did not open). Phone number given was 808 215 3947. I understand Intuit E-Commerce is a legitimate company, as is Geek Squad. I wonder if either of those companies knows of the scam using their names.

I got one that had a pdf invoice attached. I opened the invoice but it was on my phone, not my computer. I am not very tech savvy. Do I need to worry about malware being downloaded when I downloaded the file? If so, what do I do about it?

    • August 29, 2022 at 3:07 PM by an anonymous user from: Collier County, Jerome, Florida, United States

I did the same thing as you and now Im worried. I feel so stupid. Did you find out if you needed to do anything?

Just got the same fake email today - June 13, 2022 - that others have been receiving. Same basic wording, and yes, the amount was $329.99. Don't click on anything, or bother to call. It's a scam!

  • June 13, 2022 at 1:57 PM by an anonymous user from: Hicksville, New York, United States

Still happening but they've upped the amount to $349 and changed the phone number.

  • June 10, 2022 at 3:02 PM by an anonymous user from: Downtown Redmond, Redmond, Washington, United States

I called the number from my land line and they kept trying to send me a text. When I asked what number they were texting, they provided me with the land line number I was calling from then asked for my mobile number and to click on the link to start the cancelation process. I did NOT give him my mobile number. He said he had to text me the link or the payment would be processed. So I told him I would call my bank and tell them to block it. He tried to tell me I could not block the charge because either I or someone had already authorized the charge. NOT TRUE and I checked my bank account before calling.

He kept insisting that I had to click on the link they provide so I could cancel the transaction and then get my refund for the amount charged to my account. So I told him I would not be providing my financial information to him. He said they would NEVER ask for that because they already had that information. Hahah... Right! How would you get a refund if you don't provide a way of getting it. So I told him to cancel the subscription. He said he couldn't unless I clicked on the link in the text message.

Only sharing so the next person knows some of the tactics used to try to get you to comply. Don't ever click on the text link. Good Luck!

I got one today too. $329.99 and I called 802.209.9698. Once they told me I had to accept their new invoice on my computer. Told them this was fraud and was going to report them.

  • June 7, 2022 at 4:50 PM by an anonymous user from: Sunbury Township, Budd, Illinois, United States

I got one today too. $329.99 and I called 802.209.9698. Once they told me I had to accept their new invoice on my computer, I hung up. This is the closest I have come to being scammed. Feeling foolish, but grateful.

I figured it was a scam, but yes, I just got one of these emails today...it's in my really, really old AOL email. Usually when I get things in there, I know right off the bat they're just scammers and phishermen. So annoying though. I would hope that people know better than to panic and follow the advice of the email by now. Thanks for flagging this though!
