How the Scam Works

Scammers use high-pressure tactics to trick you into paying a fake fine through a fraudulent website or QR code.

• Text Message (Smishing): You receive a text claiming you have an outstanding violation for CVC 22500. It often includes a link to a fake "Department of Default Action" or "Superior Court" website.
• Fake Paper Tickets: Phony physical citations are placed on windshields, especially in the Bay Area. These often have a QR code and may include humorous fine print like "nap time" as a penalty.
• Urgent Threats: The messages threaten immediate license suspension, vehicle registration holds, or criminal prosecution if you don't pay "immediately".

Red Flags

• Payment via QR Code/Link: Official California courts and the California DMV will never ask for payment through a text message link, QR code, or cryptocurrency.
• Unusual Contact Method: Real citations are either handed to you by an officer, placed on your vehicle by authorized personnel, or sent via physical mail through the U.S. Postal Service.
• Generic Information: Fake tickets may lack specific details like your actual license plate or VIN, or they may use the same placeholder data on every notice.
