What is Profile Cloning and How to Protect Yourself?

Profile cloning is a cybersecurity threat where a scammer copies your public social media information to create a fake, duplicate account that impersonates you. Unlike account hacking, the criminal does not actually break into your real page. Instead, they use your publicly visible photos, name, and details to build a convincing twin.

How Profile Cloning Works

  • Reconnaissance: The fraudster gathers your public profile picture, bio, and friend list.
  • Creation: They open a new, fake account using your details.
  • Targeting: They send friend requests to your real friends and contacts.
  • Exploitation: Once people accept the request, the scammer sends messages asking for money, pushing fake investments, or sharing malicious links.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Lock down your privacy: Change your friends list setting from public to "Friends" or "Only Me".
  • Limit friend requests: Adjust your settings so only "Friends of Friends" can send you requests.
  • Warn your contacts: If your account is cloned, post a public warning on your real profile immediately.
  • Report the fake profile: Use the platform's reporting tool to flag the imposter account.
