How the Scam Works

If you actually add the number and message them, the scammers will typically deploy one of these common tactics:

1. The Verification Code Trick (Account Takeover): They will try to register your phone number on their own device. WhatsApp will send a 6-digit verification SMS code to your phone. The scammer will lie and say, "I accidentally sent my code to your number, can you text it back to me?" If you give it to them, they log you out of your own WhatsApp, take over your account, and begin scamming your actual friends and family for money.
2. Fake Job Offers: They may pose as recruiters (often pretending to be from job sites like "Indeed HR") offering a flexible, high-paying remote job. They eventually demand an upfront "deposit" or "training fee" before you can start working.
3. Crypto or Investment Fraud: They build up a fake friendship or romantic interest over several days, eventually convincing you to invest money into a fraudulent cryptocurrency or stock platform.
4. Malware Links: They might send you a link or file under a false pretext that installs a virus or banking trojan on your phone to steal your passwords.

What You Should Do Right Now

• Do not add the number and do not reply. Merely receiving the voicemail or text does not mean your phone is hacked. The danger only starts if you engage with them.
• Turn on Two-Step Verification immediately. Inside WhatsApp, go to Settings > Account > Two-Step Verification and set up a PIN. This prevents scammers from stealing your account even if they somehow get your SMS code.
• Block and report the number. Use the built-in block feature on your phone log or within WhatsApp.
• Never share verification codes. No legitimate company, friend, or support agent will ever ask you to text them a security code sent to your phone.
