How the Scam Works

• The Hook: You receive a text claiming there is an unauthorized transaction on your bank account.
• The Bait: The message instructs you to call a specific phone number immediately to resolve the issue or stop the transfer.
• The Trap: When you call, a fraudster impersonating a helpful bank representative answers. They will ask for sensitive data like your full card number, online banking passwords, or a one-time passcode sent to your phone.

Warning Signs to Look For

• Unknown or suspicious numbers: The text comes from a standard 10-digit mobile number or an unusual shortcode.
• Asking for secret data: Real banks will never ask you to reveal passwords, PINs, or temporary security codes over the phone.

What to Do If You Get One

• Do not call the number provided in the text message.
• Verify independently: Look up your bank's official customer service number from the back of your debit/credit card or their official website. Call that number instead to check your account status.
• Report it: Forward the scam text to 7726 (the universal spam reporting number used by most carriers) or report it directly to your bank's fraud department.
