If you received a text message or alert, which claims to be from the DMV, with a link to dmvcks.com, it is a phishing scam. The website is a fake and will trick visitors into disclosing their personal and financial infromation. State Departments of Motor Vehicles (DMVs) across the country do not send unsolicited text messages demanding immediate payment. Scammers widely use "smishing" (SMS phishing) tactics to impersonate the government, threatening you with vehicle registration hold, license suspension, or legal action over fake unpaid tolls or traffic tickets.

Red Flags of a DMV Scam

  • False Urgency: Messages usually contain aggressive warnings like "Final Notice" or "Pay now to avoid suspension".
  • Suspicious Links: The text will include a clickable link directing you to a lookalike website designed to steal your social security number, driver's license info, or credit card details.
  • Strange Phone Numbers: The message might originate from an regular cell phone number or carry international country codes (e.g., +63) rather than an official 5-digit shortcode.

What You Should Do

    1. Do Not Click the Link: Clicking the link could install malicious tracking software or malware on your phone.
    2. Report and Block: Forward the fraudulent text message to 7726 (SPAM) to notify your mobile carrier, then block the sender.
    3. Verify Manually: If you are worried you actually owe a fine, navigate directly to your state's official .gov portal by typing the address into your browser. Never use the contact info or URLs provided in the text.
  1. Protect Your Info: If you already entered your credit card info or personal details on the fake site, contact your bank immediately to freeze your accounts and monitor your credit. You can report identity theft directly at the FTC Fraud Report Portal.
