855 Area Code Scam Calls

Calls from the 855 area code can be either legitimate business communications or highly sophisticated scams. Because 855 is a toll-free prefix used across the US and Canada, scammers often exploit its "professional" appearance to trick people into answering.

855 Scam Tactics

  • The "One-Ring" Scam: Fraudsters let the phone ring once and hang up, hoping you'll call back. Calling back can result in massive international long-distance charges on your bill.
  • Imposter Scams: Callers pretend to be from the IRS, Social Security Administration, or companies like Apple or Microsoft. They often claim your account is compromised or you owe immediate payment to avoid arrest.
  • Tech Support Fraud: A caller claims your computer has a virus and requests remote access or payment for fake repair services.
  • Smishing (Text Scams): You receive a friendly text (e.g., "Hello") or a fake "wrong number" message. Replying confirms your number is active, leading to more spam.

Protect Yourself

  1. Don't Answer Unknown Calls: Let unfamiliar 855 numbers go to voicemail. Legitimate businesses will usually leave a professional message.
  2. Verify Independently: If a caller claims to be from your bank or a government agency, hang up and call the organization back using an official number from the US Government Website or your physical billing statement.
  3. Avoid Pressing Buttons: Never press a number to "opt-out" or "speak to an agent" on an unsolicited call, as this alerts scammers that your line is active.
  4. Register Your Number: Add your phone to the National Do Not Call Registry to reduce legitimate telemarketing and help identify illegal callers.
  5. Report the Incident: If you suspect a scam, report the number and the interaction to the FTC Fraud Report or the BBB Scam Tracker.

Note: If the number begins with +855 (with a plus sign), it is an international call from Cambodia, not a North American toll-free number.
